Appeal a Balance Bill in Georgia

Georgia patients are protected from surprise out-of-network bills by both the federal No Surprises Act (effective Jan 1, 2022) and Georgia's Surprise Billing Consumer Protection Act (O.C.G.A. chapter 33-20E).

If you received a surprise out-of-network bill - emergency care, air ambulance, or ancillary care at an in-network facility - the No Surprises Act limits your cost-sharing to in-network amounts and routes any payment dispute between insurer and provider through Independent Dispute Resolution. The provider may not balance-bill you.

Georgia's surprise-billing law adds state-level protections for non-emergency situations not covered by the NSA. O.C.G.A. section 33-20E-3 establishes patient protections against surprise bills from out-of-network providers at in-network facilities.

If you received a balance bill that should be NSA- or Georgia-protected, file an appeal demanding the bill be corrected, file a complaint with OCI, and (for federal NSA disputes) report to the federal Help Desk at 1-800-985-3059.
